Modern Praise & Worship Sounds Like U2

Modern praise and worship has been greatly effected by the sound of U2.

U2's "The Edge"

U2, the world’s greatest and most influential artists have a unique sound that is driven by The Edge’s guitar sound.  Generally The Edge’s guitar sound is light and airy.  It has a brightness without being shrill and and it is full of rich harmonics.

How does he get that sound?  How does he accomplish what is his, what is U2’s signature sound?  Here is a link to help you understand the way he goes about getting his sound http://www.amnesta.net/edge_delay/.

Of course to get the sound exact you’d have to be The Edge, but to mimic it really close, you’d have to learn to play like he plays and use the same sort of equipment he uses (see graphic in the link above).

I was listening to Christian radio a couple of days ago.  I haven’t listened much for a while because there is very little that is new played on adult contemporary radio.  But I heard some great new stuff and most of it was praise and worship music and I couldn’t help but notice the influence of The Edge on the sound.  It sounded like U2 with different vocals and lyrical content.  It was pretty cool.  Thank you KLove http://www.klove.com/ (Out of Kansas City, MO) and SpiritFM http://www.lifechangingradio.org/home.php (Camdenton, MO).

My attempts at praise and worship have a Doobie Brothers, Santana, 38 Special characteristic to the sound, but that’s what is natural for me.

Sounding like U2, Led Zepplin, Conway Twitty, Sinatra or whoever in P&W is well . . .  irrelevant.  What matters is your heart.

Ephesians 5:19-20, “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Praise and worship is about encouraging other Christians and making thanksgiving to God in Jesus Christ.  The sound probably doesn’t matter to God unless there is less than praise involved.  Selfishness, sinfulness, pride, etc.  God didn’t say too much about music in the church in the New Testament, he did however deal with the condition and attitude of the heart.  That’s not the point of this post, but I had to say it.

The point is, it’s pretty cool that U2’s awesome sound, excuse me, The Edge’s awesome sound is borrowed as the vehicle to carry the songs of modern praise and worship.

Bible, the Misused Book

The Bible, the only inspired revelation by God, the biggest selling book in history, the first book ever printed, is the most misused and abused writing in history.

A visual illustration that a lot of preachers have used is to have a book that looks like a Bible and going through the book, reading a passage, tearing the page out the passage is supposed to be on, wadding it up and throwing it away.  Besides the shock factor, the illustration is meant to show people how people treat the Bible in practice.

Most people would not literally rip pages out of the Bible, but when they choose not to believe certain teachings in they Bible, there is little difference from tearing up their Bible.

Thomas Jefferson did not believe in miracles.  He actually took the Bible, and wrote the things in the Bible that he believed were true in another book.  He wouldn’t physically desecrate the book, but chose not to believe the entire book.  In essence, he diminished the Bible to a set of moral teachings without the power of God.

Paul wrote these words of encouragement to Timothy.

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”  2 Timothy 3:14-17

There is another way people misuse Scripture.  They may not pick and choose what to believe like a lot of people do, they believe and they accept the Bible’s teaching as the final revelation of God, the full and final teaching God has given to mankind, but choose not live the life worthy of the Lord (Colossians 1:10).

Those Christians fail to live holy lives (1 Peter 1:13-15). They fail to be obedient to God’s word. They compartmentalized their lives, or are strongly influenced by people who are not Christians.  They live as if they have torn things out of the Bible, picking and choosing what to believe and obey.

And don’t forget those who fail to correctly divide and understand scripture (2 Timothy 2:20) for a couple of reasons, one is that they don’t take the time to read and understand the way scripture is put together, or the context of what they read or two, those who simply take the words they see and like and use them any way they want to.

God’s word is his word.  It is to be believed, obeyed, understood, and shared. The church in Acts, the first thing it says of the church is that they devoted themselves to the Apostles’ teaching (Acts 2:42). The Apostles’ teaching is the New Testament record. Their teaching is written for us. It is given to us to learn and live by. Care must be given to understanding correctly what God is telling us.

American Church, the Church of I Don’t Know!

I love the church.  It is God’s work on earth.  It is the kingdom of God, the Israel as God intended through Christ’s death. As much as I love the church, there are several issues too.

The church is divided. A majority of churches do not accept the Bible as the full and final authority for faith and life. Doctrine is interpreted and humanly developed and often inconsistent with the Bible. Read Christianity Today’s report on the Lutheran Church  http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2010/septemberweb-only/46-31.0.html).

Let’s consider further the disunity and disgrace that comes with the American church. Almost countless denominations, variations within denominations, differences of opinion within individual churches and splits and divisions running rampant. For instance, in the area I minister in, there are at least 6 churches that have split off of the local Baptist church. I believe there are more and there are a few that have split off the splits in recent years.

Then, there are the varieties of churches with varying beliefs and all claim Biblical, Holy Spirit, or Apostolic authority as the basis for what they accept and teach.

Look at some of the beliefs. Some teach that Jesus is not the only way to salvation. Some don’t even teach Jesus, or doubt his death and resurrection. Some question whether Jesus even came in the flesh (new forms of ancient Gnosticism). And sin is not exempt from the variations.

What is this? It’s a church in Santa Monica

Here’s the new spin on sin:

  • Lying is acceptable. Once a student told their Home Ec teacher that they couldn’t trust anyone who doesn’t lie.
  • Homosexuality is not condemned in the Bible therefore it is not sin and is accepted and may be endorsed by God.
  • Sex before marriage is expected. Googling statistics on premarital sex, it appears that now 82-95% of people have had sex before marriage.

The church is lost in…

The American church is the church of “I don’t know.” When one looks at the church, one may not know what to think or believe because of the variations and differences. There is one truth and variation is not allowed.

If Jesus or the Apostles appeared in your church’s meeting next Sunday, would they recognize the church of Jesus Christ, that he had the Apostles establish? I have my doubts that they would recognize the Church of Christ because sin and compromise have been the trend of the church in America.

What is the solution? Repent and follow the Scriptures alone. The Scriptures are the Bible, exclusively. Jesus is the only way to salvation. The Bible is the only and final rule of faith. And the only revelation God will give is Jesus’ second coming which we do not know when it is.

What is it All About?

9/11! Just saying that is like saying Bono. Everyone knows who Bono and what he is about even if we don’t know his real name. He is the lead singer of the biggest band in the world U2. He is a political activist that world leaders listen too.

9/11 a date that lives in infamy like the day Pearl Harbor was bombed and the day President Kennedy was killed. Everyone knows what that number means. It recognizes the day in 2001 when terrorists attacked America on its own soil. A horrible day, a day of terror.

What it is about is an attack on the beliefs of America. That we hold strong ties to freedom and free enterprise and religious diversity and free thinking and hope. Attacks on the very values that we hold, even though some of them are in decline.

It’s about one group’s hatred of what is different than their way of thinking, their values.

It’s about my values. over two thousand people died that day, but it was an attack on me because I believe in the things that they were trying to obliterate.

I thank God for my freedom. Freedom to choose and to live in the way that seems best to me and our country, America has been the greatest entity of that cause.

I fear that those behind the 9/11 attacks are not the only ones trying to destroy who we are. 9/11 was a signal that our values are under attack.

That’s what 9/11 is all about.
